The Lab took the form of a week-long student open-air workshop with guests from Slovakia and the Canary Islands. The week-long meetings were devoted to experimental music, sound recording and processing, collecting sounds of nature and developing a sound map of the village of Kopice and its surroundings.
The workshop revealed the secrets of using and building their own microphones, listening devices, and introduced an introduction to the term “field recording” and its mission. Participants learned about the concept of ‘prepositional listening’ and how to use it as a method for developing listening exercises, field recordings and other artistic or academic research on listening.
Sound sessions explored field recording, sound processing and experimental composition.
The workshop had three objectives:
- To create a common vocabulary for sound and listening
- To create a sound map of Kopice
- To make a presentation of the outcomes available to the public
The vocabulary was for internal use within the workshop through which students had a language to reflect upon.
