Public Lecture by Dr Zorka Wollny Who needs contemporary art?

The seminar will be dedicated to art in social (and urban) context. It’s aim is to bring closer the critical art, social influence of art, and its potential for strengthening the community. The relations between contemporary art, theater and music will be discussed, proposing a holistic approach to artistic activities, inclusive for various recipients needs. The presenter wants to share her experience in preparation of projects based on cooperation and realized in urban environment.  Time:10am-2pm

Zorka Wollny creates acoustic compositions for institutions, factories and empty buildings. Her works inhabit a space between art, theatre and contemporary music, and are always closely connected to the historic and functional context of specific architectural sites.
Wollny’s collaborative production style often involves public rehearsals and workshops in which she creates structures of cooperation with individuals as well as groups and communities, such as composers, students, actors and activists.
In one of her most recent works, “Unmögliche Oper” (2017), she involved several choirs and citizens of the German town Oldenburg in an exploration of the voice as a tool of expression and public debate. “Order” (2015) was composed for the Teutonic Castle in Swiecie, Poland, a 15-person volunteer choir, three percussionists and electronics. In "Oratorio for Orchestra and Warsaw Citizens Choir" (2011), developed for the Warsaw Autumn international festival of contemporary music, Wollny devised a concentrated, polyphonic manifestation in the city centre of Warsaw, that was produced in collaboration with NGO’s and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and is based on the political manifestos and agendas of the participating activists.
Her works have been exhibited at the most prestigious contemporary art institutions in Poland: Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Museum Sztuki in Łódź, Wyspa Institute of Art in Gdańsk, National Museum in Krakow, National Museum in Gdańsk, National Museum in Szczecin, Wrocław Contemporary Museum – and form part of their art collections.

Wollny has also presented her projects at the Hebbel am Ufer Theatre in Berlin (2018), CTM Festival in Berlin (2018, 2015), Savvy Contemporary in Berlin (2017, 2016), De Appel in Amsterdam (2017), Heroines of Sound Festival in Berlin (2017), International Studio&Curatorial Program in New York (2017), Tartu Museum of Art (2017), Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst in Oldenburg (2016), Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London (2014), Jazz and Experimental Music Festival in Istanbul (2014), Akademie der Künste in Berlin (2013), Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst in Leipzig (2012), Abteiberg Museum in Muenchengladbach (2012), Turner Contemporary in Margate (2011), Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade (2011), Carrara International Sculpture Biennale (2010), Z33 in Hasselt (2010), Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich (2009), Royal College of Art in London (2009), and The Fourth World Social Forum in Mumbai (2004).
